Don Bosco Tech Africa Leads Training Manual Development for Waste Academy in Malawi
From June 23 to 27, 2025, Don Bosco Tech Africa moderated a five-day workshop at Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute in Lilongwe, Malawi, to develop a training manual for the Waste Academy with a focus on plastic waste management. Organized by the ZMB Province Development Office (PDO) in collaboration with Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute Malawi, the workshop marked a key milestone in the Greening TVET through Green Education, Waste Academies Development, and Solar PV Training project supported by Jugend Eine Welt.
The workshop brought together various stakeholders, including representatives from Don Bosco TVET centres in Zambia, Malawi, and Zimbabwe; local authorities from Lilongwe; NGOs in the waste management sector; educational institutions; business organizations; the Ministry of Education Malawi; the Ministry of Natural Resources; the Environmental Affairs Department; and community members from around Don Bosco Lilongwe. PDO representatives from both ZMB and ANN Provinces also participated.
Br. John Njuguna and Beatrice Muya from Don Bosco Tech Africa facilitated the sessions that enabled participants to co-create key components of the training manual. These included the title, training objectives, stakeholder mapping, target audience, content structure, and a situational analysis of plastic waste management. The collaborative and participatory approach ensured that the manual reflects the realities and needs of the communities it is intended to serve.
With the first draft completed, the manual has now entered the final stage of review and refinement. It will be circulated among stakeholders for validation before being officially published. The pilot training will initially be implemented in the ZMB Province and subsequently scaled to other Don Bosco TVET centres across Africa, as well as to other private and public TVET institutions.
The goal of this initiative is to empower young people with green skills in waste management and green entrepreneurship, fostering ecological awareness and promoting sustainable development.
This initiative aligns with Don Bosco Tech Africa’s commitment to promoting environmentally sustainable practices within TVET and creating opportunities for young people to lead the transition to a green economy.
