Don Bosco Kenya Launches Five-Year Integral Ecology Plan

Don Bosco Kenya Launches Five-Year Integral Ecology Plan

On October 9 2025, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Kenya launched the Don Bosco Kenya Integral Ecology Plan (2025–2029), a bold and comprehensive roadmap to embed ecological responsibility into all its educational, pastoral, and social institutions.

Rooted in Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and inspired by Don Bosco’s mission of holistic youth formation, the plan affirms that caring for creation is not optional but an essential expression of faith and education. Spanning 14 institutions across the country, it is expected to benefit over 45,000 young people and community members annually.

The five-year plan is anchored on six thematic pillars: energy management, carbon management, water management, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and ecological education and spirituality. Each pillar promotes practical, measurable actions—from renewable energy use and responsible waste practices to green curricula and youth-led eco-enterprises.

Speaking at the launch, Rev. Dr Sahaya G. Selvam, Executive Director of Don Bosco Development and Outreach Network (DBDON), said, “Integral ecology is both a moral call and a practical mission. This plan seeks to form young people and educators as custodians of creation and innovators for a sustainable future. By uniting education, technology, and spirituality, Don Bosco Kenya is committed to nurturing a culture of care for our common home.”

In his address, Fr. George TJ, Provincial, AFE Province, emphasized that the Integral Ecology Plan is not just a project but a way of life that calls for a change in attitude, mentality, and lifestyle toward caring for creation. He reaffirmed the Church’s moral and spiritual duty to protect the environment, echoing Pope Francis’ reminder that the earth is a gift entrusted to each generation. Linking the plan to global commitments such as the Stockholm Declaration and the Paris Agreement, he urged young people to take the lead through green clubs, waste management, and tree planting, reminding all that the launch symbolizes a shared responsibility to nurture a greener, just, and sustainable world.

In his remarks, Fr. Savio Silveira, Coordinator for Integral Ecology in the Salesian Youth Ministry Sector and Don Bosco Green Alliance, highlighted the growing eco-anxiety among young people, urging the Salesian family to act decisively in response to the climate crisis. Highlighting Don Bosco’s long-standing commitment to ecological education, renewable energy, and green skills training, he praised Don Bosco Tech Africa for leading the Green TVET initiative, which is preparing a new generation of “green technicians” equipped to power a sustainable future. Fr. Savio affirmed that the launch of the Integral Ecology Plan in Kenya is a bold, inspiring step that will serve as a model for Salesian provinces worldwide.

Fr. Maximus Okoro, Director of Don Bosco Tech Africa, congratulated Don Bosco Kenya for launching the Ecological Strategic Plan, describing it as a living commitment to care for “our common home.” He noted that for DB Tech Africa, this milestone embodies the spirit of the Greening TVET movement, where faith, science, and education come together to form young people as artisans of hope, building livelihoods that heal rather than harm the planet. “This plan,” he said, “is our collective promise that one green action at a time, we can transform our world.”

The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders from the green sector, including representatives from government and non-governmental organizations such as the WEE Centre, Don Bosco Green Alliance, Laudato Si’ Movement, Rotary Club Karen, Verst Carbon, and Signify Foundation, among others.
